Most boccedromes ( Campi di Bocce ) in Italy now use a synthetic surface for play. This surface is laid over a carefully built up substrate of other layers including stone and asphalt. The final surface is poured on and let to settle by gravity over that perfectly flatly prepared subsurface. Sand is dusted on the final dried and set up surface to give something like the original quality and “feel” of the old style outdoor terrains.

There are only 2 companies in the USA that manufacture bocce balls.
The other suppliers with brands and products seen in general sports stores and online are distributors only and import balls mostly from China. A followup post will list those companies.
EPCO — E. Parrella Company, Inc.
36 Alder St
Medway, MA 02053
www.epcomfg.com
- EPCO emphasizes the manufacture of Bowling Balls. But has other product lines, billiard and pool balls and gear stick knobs and also bocce balls. Material used is called Partek. They are known for their Glow in the dark sets but these require a black light to get the effect.
These products are distributed by Paramount Industries – that has the same address as EPCO.

St. Pierre Manufacturing Corporation

Of the bocce manufacturers that make the synthetic balls only 3 are left.
Perfetta – Super Martel – Salf (update feb 10 2010. Salf is no longer in business )
They are all located in the tiny town of Berra. Which is about midway between Venice and Bologna in Northern Italy.

I thought I’d start with my first post by listing the manufacturers of competition bocce balls in Italy.
Perfetta is the most well known and arguably the most respected manufacturer in Italy. they have been the official supplier to the biggest bocce tournament in the world the World Bocce Championships.
www.perfetta.it Distributed in the USA by Playaboule – www.playaboule.com
Super Martel is another good manufacturer and happens to be just a few miles away from Perfetta in the same small town north of Bologna and south of Venice.
iXsport – Salf is also based in Berra close to Perfetta and Super Martel (Update 12 Feb 2010: Apparently Salf is no longer in business )
Unibloc makes the brass balls for the Volo style of bocce play
Cast is no longer in the business of making bocce balls. Apparently they are focusing on their core products pipe valves and such.
Londero makes a compressed wood bocce ball and a plastic set. Both are great for beach or for kids to play with.
